Lady Olympians Play a Tough Game

On Thursday, January 8th, our girls basketball team faced the Southern Lehigh

Spartans. Unfortunately the win was not secured, though their hard work and dedication left the team only three points short.

Olympians started of the game with control of the ball and a 3-pointer, establishing an early lead over their opponents.

They were then awarded a successful foul shot made by Brooklyn Yuhas, making the score 4-0.

Another quickly followed due to the heavy defense led by the Spartans.

The initial shot by Stacy Bos did not make it in, but Sommer Ress recovered the point.

“I think since we're all so young on our team and a few of us are freshmen, I think it’s good we came and tried our hardest.” -Brooklyn Yuhas (Freshman)

During a timeout called by our Olympians, the score was 8-4.

After a successful play by the Spartans, the game was 8-6 leading into a thirty-second timeout called by the Olympians.

They returned with control of the ball after straightening their plan, tying the game 8-8.

They maintained this neck-at-neck pace to close the 1st Quarter after the Spartans missed their foul shot.

Yuhas warmed up the second quarter with an Olympian lead by making the first 2-pointer.

The Spartans followed along right after with a successful offensive play.

After a long and strong defense from both teams, the Lady Olympians gained a lead again. Not even a minute later, we were yet again at a tie, 12-12. The Spartans scored a foul shot, giving their team a single-point lead against us, later scoring again, giving them a score of 15 opposed to our static 12. The Lady Olympians were then able to score a foul shot, followed by the Spartan's doing the same, leaving it 13-14, until a rough attack by the Spartans left the Olympians 6 points down with only thirty seconds on the clock. Being so close for time, the first half of the game ended 13-19.

After a 10-minute halftime, the lady Olympians returned, ready to try a new perspective. The Spartans scored twice in a row, leaving the Lady Olympians down ten.

Yuhas and Ryah Confer scored 2 foul shots for the Lady Olympians, and the Spartans followed with one.

The Spartans and Olympians both scored, and after a foul shot from the Spartans, the gap was lessened by a point to 17-26.

The game paused as Bos left the court in distress after an injury. There was yet again a foul

shot awarded to the Spartans, causing them to lead by 11 points.

“I think coming into the game we definitely should’ve been worried. I think we should’ve been worried so it would make us come out and play how we should’ve played. I think we definitely had them from the start, and it was a good game for all of us. But, I definitely was worried coming in, and I think we pretty much all were.” -Sommer Ress (Freshman)

After a successful basket by the Lady Olympians, with less than half a minute left, a timeout was called by the Spartans.

The Spartans then scored with less than five seconds left on the clock.

The final score for this quarter was 19-30, re-establishing the Spartans’ 11-point lead.

Bos returned to the court at the start of the last quarter after the 3rd spent recovering. Confer scored the first two baskets of the quarter, shortening the lead our opponents had from 11 points to 7.

A full timeout was then called by the

Spartans, upon returning, Bos scored a foul shot followed by a 2-pointer.

The Spartans retaliated with a two-pointer, but Confer scored her team a point with another foul shot, shortening the Spartans' lead to 6 points. Yuhas scored with less than 2 minutes on the clock, then followed by a successful foul shot by Ress, making the score twenty-nine to thirty-two.

“A disadvantage to having a small team I think is definitely having one girl on the bench, we usually have three. And our team is very very young, most of them came in from junior high last year. But some advantages since our team is so small is that we get a lot of rotation at practice so we have a pretty good team dynamic." -Makena Scherer (Junior)

Another short timeout was called by the Spartans. After the return, Yuhas was injured but persevered, staying on the court. Though, not long after, a full timeout was called by the

Olympians with only 5 and a half seconds left on the clock.

But upon return, no points were scored by either side despite strong teamwork, finalizing the Spartans' 3-point lead, winning the game.
